A new study published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine found that patients taking the drug in combination with low-fat diet achieved similar improvements in weight, serum lipids and glycemic indices as low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet (LCKD).
146 study participants, mean age 52 years and body mass index of 39.3, were either instructed to restrict their carbohydrate intake to 20 grams per day or take out of Xenical 120 mg three times daily for 30 days, and to limit their consumption of fats, cholesterol and calories.
In 48-week duration of the study, most weight loss occurs in the first 12 to 24 weeks and a maximum weight loss was achieved in 24 to 36 weeks.
“LCKD and O + LFD [orlistat plus low-fat] were equally effective to reduce weight and several risk factors for cardiovascular disease, while low-carb diet is more effective in lowering blood pressure,” the authors wrote.
The researchers wrote that the Xenical patients reported gastrointestinal adverse effects more frequently than LCKD participants, although the latter experienced their adverse events - constipation - which was mostly achieved by increasing fluid and dietary fiber while adding or fiber supplement.
“These findings underscore the importance of combining intensive dietary counseling and medical management of these activities to minimize weight and minimize adverse effects and attrition,” the researchers wrote.
